No turnaround for Zagreb Airport

Zagreb Airport has recorded its third consecutive month of passenger decline. Croatia’s busiest airport welcomed 243.954 passengers in August, a decrease of 6.5% compared to last year’s 260.809 passengers. The number of operated flights to and from the airport decreased mildly, by 24 operations, from 1.884 last year to 1.860 in 2013. The decrease is being driven by several factors, primarily due to Croatia Airlines’ network reductions. However, following the country’s entry into the European Union, passenger numbers from Russia and Turkey have also been affected due to new European Union visa regulations. As a result, Aeroflot will reduce its daily flights from Moscow to Zagreb to four weekly this winter season.

So far this year, Zagreb Airport has welcomed 1.555.200 passengers, only a slight 1% decline compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, Croatia’s coastal airports outperformed Zagreb in August. Split Airport welcomed a record breaking 344.358 passengers, and thus secured its position as the second busiest airport in the former Yugoslavia in August. The numbers represent an 18.7% increase compared to the same month last year. So far in 2013 Split has handled 1.198.080 passengers, up 12.5%.

Other airports along the coast also did well. Dubrovnik Airport handled 293.983 passengers, an increase of 5.1%. So far this year Dubrovnik Airport has welcomed 1.117.759 passengers through its doors, an increase of 4.9% compared to the same period last year. Dubrovnik Airport has been the most vocal about Croatia Airlines’ planned network reductions which will hit the airport hard this winter. The national carrier plans to suspend flights from Dubrovnik to Frankfurt and Paris and reduce the number of frequencies between the coastal airport and Zagreb. However, the airport is on the verge of securing long haul flights.

Trade Air launching scheduled flights

Croatian charter airline Trade Air has delivered on its promise and will launch its first scheduled service next week with five weekly Osijek – Zagreb flights. Trade Air put tickets on sale for the new service yesterday and they are available for purchase on the Croatia Airlines website. The charter airline was awarded a contract by the Croatian Ministry for Sea Transport and Infrastructure to operate the domestic route over the next three years. In the coming period the airline will also launch Rijeka – Split – Dubrovnik – Rijeka flights. Croatia Airlines has previously refused to operate the service from Osijek stating it was unprofitable to do so.

The flights from Osijek will operate with a leased Embraer 120 aircraft from Budapest Air Service with the capacity to seat thirty passengers. “Initially we will use an Embraer 120 but we will consider introducing our own aircraft on the route as well. This certainly represents a new segment and strategic turnaround for our company. We are extremely happy that these routes will emphasise a new level of cooperatiotrade air croatian with Croatia Airlines, considering that the ticket sale will take place through their distribution system, therefore, making tickets available for sale in all countries and enabling passengers connections through Croatia Airlines’ hub”, Trade Air CEO, Marko Cvijin said.

The long awaited service from Osijek gives hope to the airport which will no longer be deserted during the winter months. Flights from Osijek to the Croatian capital have been in the works for over a year now. “This is a really big challenge for Trade Air and Osijek Airport. It opens many business opportunities and we will give our best to meet expected targets. I’m glad we’re in this together with Trade Air with whom we have a long and successful cooperation”, Osijek Airport CEO, Domagoj Marinić noted.

The Osijek – Zagreb service will be inaugurated on Monday, September 30. Tickets are on sale on the Croatia Airlines website at 49.5 euros. Soon tickets will also be available for purchase via the Trade Air website. Trade Air, launched in 1994, has two Fokker F100 jets in its fleet. Flights details for the Osijek – Zagreb

Croatian coastal airports surge

With just 21 days left until Croatia becomes the 28th member state of the European Union, a surge in tourist numbers in the pre season period is already enhancing the performance of airports along the country’s coast. Zadar, Dubrovnik and Split have recorded impressive passenger figures in May, with the three handling a combined total of 370.250 travellers over the past month. Zadar’s notable passenger surge is being fuelled by Ryanair, which opened its first EX-YU base in the city in April. Last month Zadar Airport handled 52.851 passengers, up 37.5% on last year’s 38.430. Authorities estimate the airport will handle over 500.000 passengers this year. So far in 2013 Zadar has welcomed 98.708 travellers through its doors, up 30.4% on last year.

Dubrovnik Airport also did well with 177.763 passengers handled in May. That’s 15.1% more than the same month last year. “This indicates an excellent start to the tourist season. If such trends continue this could be a record year”, the airport said in a statement. However, it also warned it could be hit by a sharp fall in Russian and Ukrainian tourists as they now need visas to enter Croatia. “We have recorded a decline in Russian and Ukrainian passengers compared to last year. Obviously there is some sort of a problem with visas”, Frano Luetić, the airport’s deputy CEO says. So far this year, Dubrovnik Airport has handled 322.877 passengers, up 9%.

Finally, Split is also recording an increase in passenger numbers. Croatia’s third busiest airport welcomed 139.636 passengers through its doors, an improvement of 9.7%. The airport has also recorded a 9% passenger increase over the past five months. The impressive results for Croatia’s coastal airports come despite the fact that Croatia Airlines staff staged a weeklong strike in May which affected flights from all three.

September start for Zagreb terminal

Construction work on Zagreb’s brand new terminal is now on course to begin this September after operator Zagreb Airport International Company secured all necessary finances for the multi million euro project. The European Investment Bank will provide a 120 million euro loan while Zagrebačka Bank and Erste Bank will provide an additional 65 million euros. Zagreb Airport International Company, which is headed by Aéroports de Paris, has logged a request for construction permits to be issued so work on the much awaited and needed terminal can finally begin. Permits are expected to be approved within the next month after which the search for contractors can begin. Foreign construction companies are most likely to carry out the work on the terminal, with media speculating a Turkish company will work on the structure while a Belgian company will carry out work on the façade.

Once construction of the new terminal begins, it must be completed within 1.095 days (three years). The airport’s owners anticipate that the new state of the art facilities will turn Croatia’s busiest hub into a regional powerhouse and a transit point within the Balkans. The price tag of the project’s first phase will amount to 236 million euros, while the thirty year concession fee adds up to 1.9 billion euros. The concession contract signed between the Croatian government and the French operator outlined that construction of the new terminal would begin on April 11, 2013 at the latest.

Zagreb Airport is operating at full capacity as passenger numbers continue to rise. In the first four months of the year the airport welcomed 628.171 passengers through its doors – an all time record. With the country entering the European Union on July 1, a passenger surge is widely expected in the coming months. The construction of Zagreb’s second terminal will not in any way affect passengers using Croatia’s busiest airport and is expected to be operational by the end of 2016.

U nedjelju 28. listopada u Zagreb slijeće Suhoj Superjet SSJ-100

Prvi u Zagreb slijeće u nedjelju 28. listopada u 10.10 sati.

Letjet će kao i dosad četiri puta tjedno svakog ponedjeljka, srijede, petka i nedjelje.

U rujnu Dubrovnik brojem putnika gotovo dohvatio Zagreb!

U rujnu Dubrovnik brojem putnika gotovo dohvatio Zagreb!

Continue Reading

Record summer for Croatian airports

Several airports across Croatia have seen one of their best years on record. Over the summer of 2012, the country saw its best tourism results in history, helping boost passenger numbers at airports across the coast, with tourism revenue set to amount to seven billion euros by the end of the year. The airports in Split, Dubrovnik, Pula and Zadar have seen exceptional figures while Zagreb, Osijek and Rijeka have fallen short of expectations so far this year.

Split Airport is anticipating surpassing last year’s passenger record of just over 1.300.000 passengers. July and August 2012 were Split’s busiest months in history with 293.000 and 290.000 passengers handled respectively. During the first Saturday of August, the airport also surpassed its daily record by welcoming 25.291 passengers through its doors. With constant growth being recorded, Dubrovnik is also likely to surpass its 1987 passenger record when it saw 1.460.354 passengers. If so, it is expected to handle more passengers than Ljubljana Airport by the end of the year. Continue Reading

Croatia Airlines’ winter expansion Croatia Airlines leasing small jets for flights from Osijek

Croatia Airlines will expand operations from its secondary hubs such as Dubrovnik and Osijek this winter season. The Croatian carrier will introduce all year long flights from Dubrovnik to Munich, which will accompany the existing winter services to Frankfurt, Paris, Rome and Zagreb. Flights will be inaugurated on October 28. Croatia Airlines’ flights from Dubrovnik are subsidised by local authorities and plans are being made for additional subsidies for domestic routes. Recently, financial advisors found that flights between Zagreb and Dubrovnik are producing losses but should be kept within the network due to the state subsides. It also found that Munich is the airline’s most profitable destination.

Meanwhile, Osijek Airport has been given some good news. So far this year the airport has had to deal with the departure of Ryanair as well as financial problems and management issues. However, Croatia Airlines will introduce daily winter flights from Osijek to Zagreb and Split. Two thirty seat aircraft will be leased and exclusively used for the abovementioned services. The flights will be partially subsidised by the Croatian Ministry for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure. The services are set to launch on October 30. They will be scheduled so as to connect on to Croatia Airlines’ flights to Western Europe.

Croatia Airlines had had a solid 2012 so far. It has managed to handle a record number of passengers in the first half of the year despite industrial action and problems with its pilots in early 2012. Furthermore, it has also managed to somewhat reduce its losses. The airline’s new CEO, Krešimir Kučko, will take over the reins from September 1. His first moves will be closely watched.
