Dubrovnik cries foul over Croatia frequency cuts

A new feud between Croatia Airlines and Dubrovnik Airport has erupted after it was revealed the airline will cut down on its frequencies between Zagreb and Dubrovnik during the coming 2013/14 winter season. The Croatian carrier recently announced it would discontinue its year long flights from Dubrovnik to Frankfurt and Paris but said it would add more services between the city and the Croatian capital in order to offer better connections to passengers and compensate for the suspensions. However, in its preliminary schedule, the airline will be cutting down on its frequencies compared to last year with local media claiming the Croatian carrier is in breach of its agreement with the Croatian government.

dubrovnik airport

According to the agreement, Croatia Airlines has a set number of flights it must operate on domestic services until 2016 in order to receive state subsidies. During the winter, Croatia Airlines is obliged to carry out at least 22 weekly flights. The airline plans to operate eighteen this winter. If it goes through with the planned frequency cuts it would be in violation of the agreement. However Croatia Airlines says, “In our agreement with the Ministry for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, a total number of flights needed to be operated is set on a yearlong basis not on a seasonal basis”. Local press has rejected the airline’s claims as false.

Croatia Airlines, which is set to begin its privatisation process later this year, has held several meetings with local authorities in Dubrovnik recently in order to ease the tension caused by the recent announcements of flight suspensions. The CEO of Dubrovnik Airport, Roko Tolić says, “Dubrovnik is becoming more distant during the winter after years of hard work making the airport busy during the slow months. We have a great challenge ahead of us as we can no longer rely on our partner. We understand that Croatia Airlines must undergo restructuring but we will not sit with our hands crossed. We will look for partners elsewhere”. Croatia Airlines says it is still in the process finalising its winter timetable and all frequency changes are still preliminary.

Dubrovnik Airport unscathed by Croatia strike

Dubrovnik Airport unscathed by Croatia strike

Dubrovnik Airport has managed to see its passenger numbers rise in May despite an eight day long strike by Croatia Airlines cabin crew which saw many of its flights cancelled. While Dubrovnik saw the least amount of cancelations, with Zagreb and Split bearing the brunt of the industrial action, the airport’s May results are an achievement. In the first three weeks of May, the airport handled 117.933 passengers, a significant 14% increase compared to last year’s 103.368 passengers. The airport also recorded an increase in the number of flight operations by 1.7%.

This May, the number of passengers using Croatia Airlines to and from Dubrovnik decreased some 2.3%. A total of 25.947 passengers used the airline in the first three weeks compared to last year’s 26.541. The number of Croatia Airlines operated flights from Dubrovnik decreased by 3.2% as a result of the strike.

With just a month left until Croatia joins the European Union, Dubrovnik Airport is set to be the biggest winner from the country’s accession with a major spike in tourists and passengers expected. In the first four months of the year the airport handled 145.124 passengers, some 100 less than during the same period last year. The airport experienced a notable decrease in numbers in April. In 2012 Dubrovnik Airport beat its 1987 passenger record by handling 1.480.470 passengers and positioned itself as the fourth busiest airport in the former Yugoslavia, behind only Belgrade, Zagreb and Pristina. Today, Dubrovnik boasts the most modern passenger terminal in the country. A new terminal is being planned in place of the old airport building, constructed in 1962. The price tag of the project will amount to seventy million euros and is to be financed out of a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In May 2010 a new terminal opened at Dubrovnik Airport stretching over 13.700 square metres. It has the capacity to handle two million passengers per year.

Croatian coastal airports surge

With just 21 days left until Croatia becomes the 28th member state of the European Union, a surge in tourist numbers in the pre season period is already enhancing the performance of airports along the country’s coast. Zadar, Dubrovnik and Split have recorded impressive passenger figures in May, with the three handling a combined total of 370.250 travellers over the past month. Zadar’s notable passenger surge is being fuelled by Ryanair, which opened its first EX-YU base in the city in April. Last month Zadar Airport handled 52.851 passengers, up 37.5% on last year’s 38.430. Authorities estimate the airport will handle over 500.000 passengers this year. So far in 2013 Zadar has welcomed 98.708 travellers through its doors, up 30.4% on last year.

Dubrovnik Airport also did well with 177.763 passengers handled in May. That’s 15.1% more than the same month last year. “This indicates an excellent start to the tourist season. If such trends continue this could be a record year”, the airport said in a statement. However, it also warned it could be hit by a sharp fall in Russian and Ukrainian tourists as they now need visas to enter Croatia. “We have recorded a decline in Russian and Ukrainian passengers compared to last year. Obviously there is some sort of a problem with visas”, Frano Luetić, the airport’s deputy CEO says. So far this year, Dubrovnik Airport has handled 322.877 passengers, up 9%.

Finally, Split is also recording an increase in passenger numbers. Croatia’s third busiest airport welcomed 139.636 passengers through its doors, an improvement of 9.7%. The airport has also recorded a 9% passenger increase over the past five months. The impressive results for Croatia’s coastal airports come despite the fact that Croatia Airlines staff staged a weeklong strike in May which affected flights from all three.

U rujnu Dubrovnik brojem putnika gotovo dohvatio Zagreb!

U rujnu Dubrovnik brojem putnika gotovo dohvatio Zagreb!

Continue Reading

Record summer for Croatian airports

Several airports across Croatia have seen one of their best years on record. Over the summer of 2012, the country saw its best tourism results in history, helping boost passenger numbers at airports across the coast, with tourism revenue set to amount to seven billion euros by the end of the year. The airports in Split, Dubrovnik, Pula and Zadar have seen exceptional figures while Zagreb, Osijek and Rijeka have fallen short of expectations so far this year.

Split Airport is anticipating surpassing last year’s passenger record of just over 1.300.000 passengers. July and August 2012 were Split’s busiest months in history with 293.000 and 290.000 passengers handled respectively. During the first Saturday of August, the airport also surpassed its daily record by welcoming 25.291 passengers through its doors. With constant growth being recorded, Dubrovnik is also likely to surpass its 1987 passenger record when it saw 1.460.354 passengers. If so, it is expected to handle more passengers than Ljubljana Airport by the end of the year. Continue Reading

Dubrovnik surpasses million

Dubrovnik Airport welcomed its millionth passenger for the year this Thursday, ten days ahead of 2011. The lucky millionth passenger arrived on an easyJet flight from Madrid. Belen Lozoya Canas received a return ticket from Dubrovnik to any European destination served from the city, three nights of all expenses paid accommodation and various vouchers. Dubrovnik Airport’s general manager, Roko Tolić, believes the airport could break its annual record, set back in 1987, if the upward growth trends continue.

Dubrovnik Airport’s busiest year was 1987 when it welcomed 1.460.354 passengers while its busiest post independence year was 2011 when 1.349.501 travellers used its services. The airport had a slow start to the year with numbers declining in January and February, however, business picked up during spring. In July alone, Dubrovnik handled 279.368 passengers, an increase of 9% compared to the same month last year. If the airport is to exceed its 1987 record, it is likely it will handle more passengers than Ljubljana Airport by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Dubrovnik will become the first airport in Croatia to feature air bridges. In December, the first two out of four air bridges will be installed, meaning passengers will no longer have to board busses to get to their aircraft. Dubrovnik has the most modern terminal building in the country. Opened in 2010, it stretches over 13.700 square metres and has the capacity to handle two million passengers annually. However, the airport’s modernisation and expansion project is still ongoing.
