Frequency boost for Serbia – Croatia flights

The Serbian national carrier will operate up to thirteen weekly flights to the Croatian coast this summer season, a notable increase compared to last year. During the summer, Jat will resume its seasonal flights to Pula, Dubrovnik and Split. As was the case in 2012, it will face competition on the Belgrade – Split service from Croatia Airlines. Jat will double its frequencies to Pula and Split from two to four times per week. Services to Split will launch on June 7 and will operate every Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. In addition, flights to Pula resume a day later, on June 8, and will run every Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Services to Dubrovnik will be the most frequent with up to five weekly flights starting June 7. They will operate every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The equipment to be used on all the flights is an ATR72.

Croatia Airlines will also resume its Split – Belgrade service, launched last year. The airline will not be increasing its frequencies but has moved the flights forward to May 1. They will operate until the end of the summer season, extending flights from four to six months. The service will go head to head against Jat with flights operating every Monday and Friday with the Bombardier Dash 8.

Scheduled passenger flights between Croatia and Serbia resumed in 2008 for the first time since the breakup of Yugoslavia when Jat Airways launched seasonal flights to Pula. However, the service was not reintroduced the year after due to bureaucratic issues between the two countries. Last year Croatia Airlines launched the Split – Belgrade service, connecting the two cities for the first time since the summer of 1991. Belgrade will be connected to the Croatian coast with up to fifteen weekly flights this summer compared to nine last year.

Busy summer ahead for Croatia Airlines

Busy summer ahead for Croatia Airlines

Croatia Airlines is anticipating its busiest summer season since it began passenger operations 22 years ago. With a record tourist season and the country’s entry into the European Union expected this coming summer, Croatia Airlines has significantly boosted its frequencies and flight offering. The Croatian carrier will launch services from Pula to Paris, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Erfurt. Furthermore, it will strengthen its position in Dubrovnik where it was the busiest carrier in 2012 with 408.399 passengers carried to and from the city. The airline plans to launch flights from Dubrovnik to Dresden and will boost frequencies to Zurich to a total of five weekly flights. As Croatia becomes the 28th member state of the European Union, the national carrier will significantly boost frequencies to the European capital Brussels. Flights from Zagreb to the Belgian capital will increase from six to eleven times per week. Equipment operating on the service will be a combination of Dash 8s and Airbus A319s. The airline will extend its seasonal flights from Split to Belgrade by two months compared to last summer and has been ordered by the Croatian government to launch flights from Rijeka to Split and Dubrovnik.

Last year, Croatia Airlines’ pilots criticised the management’s decision to cut down on the number of charter flights. However, this summer the airline will also boost its charter flight offering. Croatia Airlines will replace SAS Scandinavian Airlines on charters from Dubrovnik to Evenes in Norway and Skelleftea in Sweden, while it will substitute Adria Airways on the Split – Lulea charter service. Flights from Osijek to Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split, which the airline was ordered to launch, are still doubtful at this point.

With the busy summer ahead, Croatia Airlines will utilise its entire fleet of thirteen aircraft and could be forced to lease additional jets as has been the case last summer when it leased a Fokker F100 from Tradeair. Croatia Airlines has delayed the arrival of four new Airbus A319s until 2015. Tradeair itself has hinted it will launch its own scheduled flights this summer, adding competition on the home market. Croatia Airlines will also face added competition from various low cost airlines, including Ryanair which will set up a base in Zadar. Furthermore, it will be the first summer the airline will face off against British Airways on flights from Zagreb to London.

Croatia Airlines to lease Embraer jet

Croatia Airlines will take delivery of an Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia jet soon which is to be exclusively used on services from Osijek to Zagreb and Split. The thirty seat turboprop commuter aircraft will be taken on lease from Budapest Air Services. The aircraft features a 2+1 seat configuration and has low operating costs. The lease of the aircraft was first announced in August when Osijek Airport held talks with Croatia Airlines for flights to operate between Osijek, Zagreb and Split over the coming winter season.

The new service will give a boost to Osijek Airport which is deserted during the winter months. The flights from Osijek to Zagreb will operate on a daily basis while the service to Split will run twice per week. Both will launch on October 29. Services are scheduled so as to connect on to the airline’s flights to Western Europe. A return ticket from Osijek to Zagreb will set passengers back approximately eighty euros. Flights will be bookable from October 1, only through the airline’s website. Up until now, Croatia Airlines has operated a seasonal service from Split to Osijek. On the 24 flights which were performed over the 2012 summer season, the national carrier welcomed 1.389 passengers on the route, with an average cabin load factor of 76%.

The addition of the Brasilia brings Croatia Airlines’ fleet number to a total of fourteen. The airline has a further four Airbus A319s on order, though their delivery has been delayed by the carrier until 2015. Consultancy firms have advised Croatia Airlines to downsize on its fleet in an attempt to save costs. They have suggested the airline should retire two Airbus A320s this winter.

Croatia Airlines’ winter expansion Croatia Airlines leasing small jets for flights from Osijek

Croatia Airlines will expand operations from its secondary hubs such as Dubrovnik and Osijek this winter season. The Croatian carrier will introduce all year long flights from Dubrovnik to Munich, which will accompany the existing winter services to Frankfurt, Paris, Rome and Zagreb. Flights will be inaugurated on October 28. Croatia Airlines’ flights from Dubrovnik are subsidised by local authorities and plans are being made for additional subsidies for domestic routes. Recently, financial advisors found that flights between Zagreb and Dubrovnik are producing losses but should be kept within the network due to the state subsides. It also found that Munich is the airline’s most profitable destination.

Meanwhile, Osijek Airport has been given some good news. So far this year the airport has had to deal with the departure of Ryanair as well as financial problems and management issues. However, Croatia Airlines will introduce daily winter flights from Osijek to Zagreb and Split. Two thirty seat aircraft will be leased and exclusively used for the abovementioned services. The flights will be partially subsidised by the Croatian Ministry for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure. The services are set to launch on October 30. They will be scheduled so as to connect on to Croatia Airlines’ flights to Western Europe.

Croatia Airlines had had a solid 2012 so far. It has managed to handle a record number of passengers in the first half of the year despite industrial action and problems with its pilots in early 2012. Furthermore, it has also managed to somewhat reduce its losses. The airline’s new CEO, Krešimir Kučko, will take over the reins from September 1. His first moves will be closely watched.

Croatia Airlines in US deal

US Airways and Croatia Airlines have announced a new bilateral code share agreement after receiving approval from the Croatian Civil Aviation Agency and the United States Department of Transportation. Croatia Airlines will code share on US Airways’ services from Europe to Philadelphia and Charlotte (flight numbers OU5000 and upwards). The Croatian national carrier will also add its code on US Airways flights from Philadelphia to Cleveland, Detroit and St. Louis. In the future, there are plans for US Airways to code share on Croatia Airlines flights from Europe to Dubrovnik and Split.

Speaking of the new arrangement, Andrew Nocella, US Airways’ Senior Vice President for Marketing and Planning said, “US Airways’ new codeshare agreement with Croatia Airlines will provide our customers with expanded options to reach Zagreb, the capital of the Republic of Croatia, with a convenient single ticket purchase”. He added, “We look forward to strengthening this bond and expanding travel options to our customers visiting Croatia and for Croatia Airlines customers visiting the United States”.

Through the new agreement, Croatia Airlines is hoping to lure away transit passengers from the likes of Air France and Austrian but also Oneworld rival British Airways, which expects to carry large amounts of transit passengers to the United States once it launches flights to Zagreb this December. Croatia Airlines is currently the only airline in the former Yugoslavia with its own codes on US bound flights. US Airways is also a member of Star Alliance like Croatia Airlines.

Croatia Airlines advised to downsize fleet

Croatia Airlines advised to downsize fleet
Three consultancy firms, Dutch based KPMG, international conglomerate BDO and Intel, who have been selected to advise Croatia Airlines during its restructuring and recovery programme have proposed for the carrier to downsize on its fleet in order to save costs. The recovery plan, leaked by the Croatian media, suggests the airline should retire two Airbus A320s. Croatia Airlines currently has three aircraft of the type in its fleet with the capacity to seat 164 passengers. The aircraft have already been earmarked for retirement as they are due to be replaced by new Airbus A319s. However, the arrival of the A319s has now been delayed by several years until 2015.

In contrast to the advised, Croatia Airlines has been forced to lease aircraft this summer due to its fleet already being stretched over the busy months. The airline is using one of Adria Airways’ Airbus jets for weekend flights while a Trade Air Fokker F100 has also been operating some flights on behalf of Croatia Airlines this summer. The aircraft is currently being used on flights from Zagreb to Rome, Split and Copenhagen. It is also utilised on services from Split to Dusseldorf and the Italian capital.

The news comes after it was suggested the carrier will need to shed its international network to make a profit. Many have insinuated that Lufthansa, which already carries a large portion of transit passengers from Croatia Airlines, would benefit most from the carrier’s downsizing. In January, the Union of Croatia Airlines Pilots slammed its employer, suggesting that the Croatian carrier is being mismanaged and controlled by Lufthansa. “All of our services are adjusted to Lufthansa as can be seen with flights to Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna and Zurich. Croatia Airlines serves as a classic feeder airline which, through the abovementioned cities, fills Lufthansa’s flights. Croatia Airlines has only seven code share agreements with Star Alliance member airlines, four of which are owned by Lufthansa and the remaining two are heading in that direction”, the union said at the time.

Tough times ahead for Croatia Airlines

Croatia Airlines is planning a major shakeup of its international network with flights to Podgorica, Priština and London Gatwick to be suspended as part of its restructuring and financial recovery programme. The airline has shortlisted flights to London Heathrow, Paris, Istanbul and Copenhagen for suspension unless the routes do not start making money in the foreseeable future, Croatian media reveal. The suspensions have been proposed by the three financial consulting companies the airline hired to assist with its recovery programme. The Croatian carrier is expected to boost ticket prices to London, Paris, Istanbul and Copenhagen in a last ditch attempt to make the services profitable. In spite of this, financial advisors have proposed for Croatia Airlines to sell some of its lucrative slots at both London and Paris.

Some domestic services are also struggling including flights from Zagreb to Split and Dubrovnik. However, Croatia Airlines receives state subsidies for its domestic network, a practice which will be banned once the country enters the European Union in the summer of 2013. Other regional routes are also recording losses, though flights to Skopje and Sarajevo will be kept as they currently carry large amounts of transit passengers. Croatia Airlines’ most profitable flights are to Lufthansa’s major hubs – Munich and Frankfurt.

It has been estimated that Croatia Airlines will need somewhere between 80 and 130 million euros in order to come back up on its feet. The Croatian government is planning to provide at least part of the cash injection in coherence with European Union laws and regulations. Local aviation analysts believe that the major network reduction planed for the Croatian national carrier starting this winter could serve as major blow to the airline and its reputation.
